Who we are
We’re a group of passionate people brought together by our shared drive to create change and improve outcomes for everyone when someone dies. This includes the dying person and the people around them.
We come from all walks of life. Some of us work directly in the death space such as palliative care, funeral directors and death administration. While others of us work in health, technology, communication, social innovation and more.
What we do
Under the guidance of The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) and with funding from The Wicking Trust, we are focused on driving systemic change in the end of life system. We provide a supportive environment for sharing insights, guidance, support, and connections, to help increase the impact of our individual efforts. We use our funding to support member-driven innovative projects that are aimed at improving death outcomes.
How it works
We use a systems network approach - mapping the system from where each member stands, and identifying leverage points to shift conditions that perpetuate problems with the way people generally die in Australia. Through this work, we’ve identified six change levers that could impact the end of life system. Every month we meet online and discuss the work we’re doing both individually and as a network. We look at ways we can help each other, and identify how the impact of our activities can be improved and amplified through our shared resources.
Why we do it
It’s inevitable that we’re all going to die. So, don’t you want to die:
peacefully
supported physically and emotionally
in line with your values
with your life in order
in a way that helps you and your loved ones process grief?
We believe these are important elements to a good death, but unfortunately the system is not set up to achieve these good death outcomes. We’re working to change that.
Ways we work to improve how people die in Australia
Collaborate
We work from a systems perspective. Our members have different skill sets, varied backgrounds and perspectives.
Shared goals
We share the same goals - to make end of life better for everyone.
Actions
We work collectively and individually on real world projects to create positive death outcomes.
“I told them my system was based on the "ant plan," that I'd gotten the idea watching a colony of ants in Africa during the war.
A whole bunch of ants working toward a common goal.”
