Carked it!

The game

In a world where serious discussions about end-of-life matters are often uncomfortable, the Good Death Impact Network co-created the irreverent game Carked It! to challenge societal norms and redefine how we approach conversations about dying and death.

Never ones to take life (or death) too seriously, Simon and Leonie from The Ageing Revolution and the Good Death Impact Network, came up with the fantastic idea to facilitate conversations about death and dying - through gaming.

How Carked It! was born

Carked It! was born from the network and its catalysing effects. The network aims to increase awareness about what creates a good death and the improvement of death literacy.

Over a period of two years, the game was designed, tested, re-designed and re-tested with members of the network across Australia, all of whom voted to partially fund the creation of the game.

Death isn’t funny – why make light of it in a game?

By infusing elements of fun and play into the concept of discussing end-of-life matters, Carked It! breaks down barriers and encourages individuals to confront their feelings and thoughts surrounding mortality.

This innovative approach to addressing a sensitive topic is a testament to the power of creative thinking and collaboration.

Carked It! gets people talking about death in a fun and safe way.

It can be played as a funny card game with friends or at social gatherings (anyone for a hand of Halloween humour?). It’s a great way for people to get to know each other. It can also be used for its more serious purpose — to facilitate what can otherwise be very difficult discussions about what happens at the end of… us.

We always had a desire to create a game that would entertain and challenge players, while shedding light on the taboo topic of ageing and mortality.

Simon Lowe (pictured) and Leonie began The Ageing Revolution as a force to address ageism.

Their focus includes  issues like caregiving, technology, gender, disability, health and wellbeing, aged care, transport, fashion, travel property, finance, media – anything where older people are involved. And let’s face it, that’s basically everything!
